Authenticators (like Google, Microsoft, RSA, others) are a second factor that prove to a service you-are-who-you-say-you-are. They are not keys. If fact, authenticators require recovery keys. If you have an authenticator on your phone and then lose your phone, you’d have to use the authenticator recovery (each service has its own).
